Michael Niblett Race Report Number 6 2010
Michael Niblett, the 26-year-old Hinckley-based road racer, heads for the fifth and final round of the EMRA championships at Mallory Park on September 26, leading both the Ducati Coventry JHP 175-1300cc championship and Buildbase Trophy series.
Niblett was in great form in the fourth round of the competition, last Sunday, winning both big-bike championship races and taking third spot in the Buildbase Trophy final on his Kestel Honda Fireblade.
Second fastest in qualifying, Niblett made an awful start to the first 175-1300 race because of clutch judder.
He was 12th in the 21-strong field going in Gerrard’s at the start, but quickly worked his way to sixth position at the end of the opening lap.
Fifth on lap three, he was third a lap later before moving into second place just after the half-way stage of the ten-lap race. Two laps from home he passed Tim Howells (Suzuki 1000) to take the lead and crossed the line just under two fifths of a second in front of his big rival.
Niblett’s next race was a round of the season-long Buildbase Trophy.
Third best in qualifying he made no mistakes this time at the start and was third behind Howells and Mark Littler (Kawasaki 1000) at the end of lap one.
He passed Littler on the exit to Gerrard’s on the next lap, but five-laps from home made a mistake at the Bus stop, allowing Luke Stapleford (Kawasaki 600) to overtake him.
He crossed the line third at the end of the 15-lap race, behind winner Howells and second-placed Stapleford.
Niblett made no mistake in his third and final race of the day, the second 175-1300cc event. He trailed race leader Howells for three laps before taking the lead and going on to win, over nine seconds in front of Howells.
Once again Niblett had set the fastest lap of the race in the big-bike class and his efforts earned him Rider of the Day award.
More importantly it meant that he leads the Buildbase Trophy series by one point from Howells and has a ten point advantage over the same rival in the 175-1300cc championship.
Everything now hangs on the results on September 26, with double points at stake in each race.
